Hubbell web

Thomas Michael (Tom) Hubbell, age 73, a lifelong resident of Brooklyn, Mich., lost his courageous three-year battle with pancreatic cancer Sunday, Aug. 7, 2016, under the loving care of his family. Tom was born June 12, 1943, in Lima, Ohio, to Mary Irma (Tighe) and Franklin Reeder Hubbell II. He was a 1961 graduate of Brooklyn High School. In 1965, he married his lifelong companion, Gloria Weber Hubbell, and enjoyed 51 years of marriage with her.

He spent the first 30 years of his adult life working at Ford Motor Company. He had a successful second career in real estate, working as a real estate agent in the Irish Hills area and eventually opening and operating Brooklyn Realty with Gloria, before retiring in 2010. He was an active parishioner at St. Joseph’s Shrine Catholic Church, having served as grand knight and a very active member of the Knights of Columbus. Above all else, Tom was a family man.

He is survived by his spouse and his children, Brian (Christina) Hubbell of Jackson, Brenda Hubbell of Tempe, Ariz., and Jenny (Steve) Hubbell Ott of Kalamazoo. Tom was a devoted grandfather of Brian’s children, Lauren, Benjamin and Connor; and Jenny’s children, Owen and Evan. Tom enjoyed a lifetime of friendship with his surviving brothers, Franklin R. (Pat) Hubbell III and William (Sandra) Hubbell. Tom also was a loving uncle to his brothers’ children and grandchildren. Tom was preceded in death by his parents and infant sister, Sally.

Tom was an avid outdoorsman, using his hobbies of boating, fishing, camping and hunting to spend quality time with his family. Tom loved having his family and friends around him and will be remembered for his generous and fun-loving spirit. Every day Tom fought against cancer was one more day to spend with his family and friends.

Tom’s family will receive friends on Friday, Aug. 12 from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Borek Jennings Funeral Home with a scripture service at 7 p.m. On Saturday, Aug. 13, 2016, a funeral mass celebrating Tom’s life, with Father Carl Simon as celebrant, will be held at noon, with the family gathering and receiving friends beginning at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Shrine Catholic Church, 8743 US-12, Brooklyn.

In Tom’s honor, memorial donations may be shared with the Irish Hills Knights of Columbus, Council #6223, at St. Joseph’s Shrine.
