Robert H. Rainey

Robert H. Rainey, of Port Charlotte, Fla., went to his Lord Jan. 14, 2016, at the age of 92.

Robert was born Dec. 26, 1923, in Ann Arbor, Mich., to Melbourn and Ethel Rainey. He grew up on a farm in Springville, Mich. Soon after graduating from Onsted High School he entered the U.S. Navy and served on the U.S.S. Manila Bay aircraft carrier, as a radioman in World War II.

After his discharge he applied and received from then-President Harry S. Truman the U.S. postal job in Onsted as postmaster and served 30 years.

Robert also volunteered his services to the U.S. Air Defense Team to be a ground observer at night to watch for unknown aircraft flying over the Irish Hills area.

Robert married Clara Ellen M. Gattschalk Sept. 26, 1947, and raised three children in Onsted. After retiring from the post office the couple moved to Harrison, Mich.

Robert is preceded in death by his parents, wife, Clara, his brothers, Homer and Arthur and sister, Juanita. He is survived by his children, Rebecca (Bill) Huhn, Kevin (Nancy) Rainey, Eric (Toni) Rainey; grandchildren, Ryan (Laura) Huhn, Michele Rockey; Sarah, Nickaless, Brittany Rainey; Kristin (Aaron) Suire, Scott (Lauren) Laureno, Matthew and Noah Rainey; four great-grandchildren, Emma, Aiden, Audrey and Rachel.

Cremation has taken place.
